Portrait Session: Christian

When I saw that Agora was going to have an Instagram installation, I jumped at the chance to collaborate. We Are Glitterati was inspired by how social media has changed communications in every day life and Instagram’s success is a testament of how powerful a visually centered social network can be.

I spoke to Columbus Alive! about the submission process and my hopes for the interaction with the installation. Last Saturday, it all came together. Most people would wander to the instagram wall without noticing the large frame hanging a few feet away. With a remote trigger, I was able to snap a candid shot of their curiosity without them knowing.

I used this an an opener to the conversation. Immediately after the camera flash, I introduced myself and my intention with the installation. After a little back and forth dialogue, I then asked if they wanted to pose for a typical photobooth picture. I also encouraged people to instagram the rest of the show by using the #Agora9 hashtag.

It was interesting to learn which photo drew them in, if they had submitted any instagrams of their own, and what they thought about Instagram’s popularity in comparison to conventional photography. Overall the project was a success. I feel that I filled the void between social media and an “IRL” (in real life) interaction.

Life is a journey, not a destination.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks as soon as we tore down our photography equipment. The planning, the research, the cutting, the arranging, the painting, the power tools… it made me appreciate the creation process on a completely different level. I was forced to be more confident in my choices and be willing to admit when I needed some direction. Junctionview Studio residents were more than willing to let me borrow tools, takeover their space, and lend a hand. I learned a lot about time management, patience, and the art of collaboration.

The process that I’m accustomed to is the polar opposite. I’m staring at my computer screen, on my own, playing with photoshop’s options and if I mess up, no big deal. That’s what Command Modifier icon Z is for.

I didn’t expect to have so much personal growth from this experience but it was a beautiful surprise. It has inspired me to take more steps out of my comfort zone.

Picked up a new toy to play with from Midwest Photo Exchange yesterday. Matt was kind enough to model for a test shot.

My fav is # 7… Neon All the Way! I’m seeing it everywhere and I’m immediately transported back to the 90s when I was completely obnoxious with those colors. Now I can sport some cute wedges in a fitting homage.

I got to play photo assistant today with one of Matt Reese’s engagement shoots. Had fun exploring Italian Village and doing my best to make the couple laugh.

I had a wonderful time at the Midwest Photo Exchange Photography Expo this weekend. We Are Glitterati was invited to set up a photobooth. This was an unique opportunity because we were able to talk shop with other local photographers. Many attendees were interested in our business concept and we were more than willing to explain our setup. I sat in on a marketing class and visited the vendor booths where I caught LumoPro’s Kevin Deskins testing out a prototype. I traded trial & error stories with the Ely Brothers and caught up with Brian Schwartz who shot the Sublime/311 show with me last year at the LC. Very inspired to apply what I learned to my personal photography and We Are Glitterati.
